Book of Shadows Slot Review — Free Demo Guide

Book of Shadows is Nolimit City's dark-fantasy take on the book-slot formula — the scatter-and-expanding-symbol mechanic that has filled slot lobbies for years, dressed here in occult imagery and gothic typography. Its twist is the Shadow Rows: 5 reels of 3, 4 or 5 rows (Shadow Rows), paying on 10, 15 or 20 paylines. Free spins pick one symbol that expands across its reel, Lucky Locks re-spins with the reels you choose held in place, and a gamble option can turn a win into a shot at the bonus. Nolimit City lists an RTP of 96.01%, rates the volatility Extreme and puts the maximum payout at 30,338× the bet.

How Book of Shadows Works

The layout is 5 reels of 3, 4 or 5 rows (Shadow Rows), on 10, 15 or 20 paylines — the more rows are open, the more lines pay. Book symbols trigger the Free Spins bonus, and before the round starts one symbol is chosen to expand: whenever it lands during the bonus, it grows to cover its whole reel and pays from any position.

• ✓Shadow Rows: 5 reels of 3, 4 or 5 rows (Shadow Rows).
• ✓Paylines: 10, 15 or 20 paylines.
• ✓Free Spins: one symbol is picked to expand across its reel for the whole round.
• ✓Lucky Locks: a re-spin with the reels you choose held in place.
• ✓Gamble: a 50/50 double-up and a wheel that can turn a win into the bonus.
• ✓Bonus buy: Nolimit Bonus buy — 60×, 90× or 120× for 3, 4 or 5 rows.

RTP, Volatility and Max Win

Nolimit City's own page lists 96.01%, a volatility rating of Extreme and a maximum payout of 30,338× the bet. Some aggregator sites show different figures for this game; the numbers here are the studio's. Extreme volatility means most sessions end without a big hit — the average return is concentrated in rare Free Spins rounds with a premium symbol expanding.

Strategy Tips

Like all book-style slots, the game turns on which symbol you draw for the expanding role. Premium symbols deliver the long Free Spins runs; low-pay symbols usually under-deliver. The Shadow Rows add a second question: more rows mean more lines, and a bigger board for the expanding symbol to fill.

• ✓Keep stakes small relative to your bankroll — at this volatility the base game is often quiet for long stretches.
• ✓Use the demo to compare bonus rounds on three, four and five rows before choosing how to play elsewhere.
• ✓Try Lucky Locks on near-misses to see how often holding reels pays off.
• ✓Retriggers during Free Spins are the path to the biggest payouts.

Who Book of Shadows Is For

It is built for players who already like book slots and want more to do than wait for scatters. The Shadow Rows, Lucky Locks and the gamble options give you decisions that most games in the genre never ask for, and the expanding symbol keeps the classic tension of the free spins intact. It is a poor fit for anyone who wants steady, frequent wins: with a volatility rating of Extreme, long runs of small results are part of the design, and a session can be decided by a single bonus round.

Can You Play Book of Shadows in the USA?

Nolimit City’s terms name the countries where its demos may not be played — Belgium, Cameroon, Canada, India, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Romania, the United Kingdom, Ukraine and Vietnam — and the United States is not on the list; an archived US visit to its demo server in 2026 was marked as not restricted. We cannot test from the US ourselves, so treat this as likely.
